Smyrna
is a town of approximately 7,500 that straddles the Kent and New Castle county lines. It offers quiet residential neighborhoods, a bustling business district and a wide variety of cultural, historical and recreational opportunities. To begin, there are over 490 buildings in Smyrna that are on the National Register of Historic Homes. The Smyrna Museum Complex is located at 11 South Main Street. The main building in the complex was formerly known as The Barracks and has been renovated to show the changing architectural and furnishing styles from early Federal to late Victorian. The Plank House is also part of the complex and is a wonderful example of a structure from the early 1700s. The Smyrna Museum Complex is open on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays from 10:00 am until 1:00 pm and admission is free. Other places of interest in town include the Smyrna Opera House, which is both a theater and art gallery. For nature lovers, the town of Smyrna is near the Blackbird Forest, which offers hunting, hiking and camping. Just east of Smyrna along the Delaware Bay Coast is Bombay Hook National Wildlife Refuge. This 16,000 acre refuge includes salt marshes, ponds, forests and fields and opportunities for bird watching, walking tours, nature programs, fishing and boating.

Central Delaware has a four-season climate that is classified as humid subtropical. Since almost all of the state is part of the Atlantic Coastal Plain, the effects of the ocean moderate the weather. The Atlantic Coastal Plain is flat and not very high, reaching no more than 80 feet above sea level. Summers are warm and sometimes humid, with July being the hottest month of the year. Winters are cold, but not frigid. In fact, the whole state of Delaware has relatively mild winters because the mountains of Pennsylvania protect it from cold northwest winds. Monthly average temperatures range from a high of 85.6 degrees in summer to a low of 23.2 degrees in winter. Precipitation is distributed fairly evenly throughout the state, although the north and southeast receive more precipitation than the central portion of the state. Thunderstorms are common in the summer months. Tornado activity in Central Delaware is less than the national average. Hurricanes rarely make direct his on the state, and plenty of warning is given for these types of storms.
