Delaware-City is a small port town located on the Delaware River in the northern part of the state. It is situated on the eastern terminus of the original Chesapeake and Delaware Canal. The town is also the location of the ferry to Fort Delaware on Pea Patch Island. This quaint riverfront community is the gateway to many historic and natural attractions. Delaware City's tree-lined Historic District contains over 200 structures featuring architectural styles from the 19th and early 20th centuries. For outdoor recreation, the area is popular with bird watchers, bicyclists, kayakers, canoeists, and hikers. Fort Delaware on Pea Patch Island is a state park that is filled with historical significance. The southern end of the island is home to the fort, while the northern end is a bird sanctuary, recently recognized by the Audubon Society for its continental significance. The nature trail on Pea Patch Island is approximately three-quarters of a mile long and has an observation tower. The ferry at Delaware City also travels to Fort Mott and Fort DuPont. The Delaware State Parks maintains nature trails throughout Fort DuPont, and many of the buildings were used during World War II as a prisoner of war camp. A boat launch area is also located at Fort DuPont.

Northern Delaware, which consists of New Castle County, is generally considered to have a humid subtropical climate. There is some debate as to whether the extreme northern portion of the county is humid subtropical or warm continental. The main difference being whether winter temperatures are cold enough to support a fixed period of snow cover each year. Most areas of northern Delaware experience relatively mild winters because the mountains of Pennsylvania protect it from harsh, cold winds. Summers are warm and humid with thunderstorms, although not as hot as the southeastern part of the state. Precipitation is distributed fairly evenly throughout the state; however, the north and southeast receive the most precipitation. Delaware is a tiny state, only 96 miles long and from 9 to 35 miles across. Almost all of the state is part of the Atlantic Coastal Plain and therefore the effects of the ocean moderate the climate. Severe storms, such as hurricanes are rare in northern Delaware and when they do occur, plenty of warning is given for these types of storms.
