Odessa is a small town located in New Castle County in northern Delaware. Originally called Cantwell's Bridge, the name was changed in the 19th century after the Ukrainian port city of the same name. A large portion of the town is designated a National Historic District. In the 18th century, the town of Odessa played a vital role as a grain shipping port in commercial life along the busy Delaware River. Today, it has lovely tree-lined streets and fine examples of 18th and 19th century architecture. Odessa is also home to two parks. Odessa Memorial Park boasts a quarter-mile walking/biking path, a basketball court, ball field, picnicking facilities and a new playground. Odessa Memorial Park is located on Route 299 west of town. Old Academy Park is located behind the Town Office and is a peaceful, quiet place for a picnic and also offers a tennis court and playground equipment. The village of Odessa is also host to Halloween in the Park, held in Odessa Memorial Park each year. Other places to visit in New Castle County near Odessa include Fort Delaware State Park, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Originally a fort to protect the ports of Wilmington and Philadelphia, today the park offers a living history museum, hiking and picnicking. Fort Delaware State Park can be accessed only by ferry.

Northern Delaware, which consists of New Castle County, is generally considered to have a humid subtropical climate. There is some debate as to whether the extreme northern portion of the county is humid subtropical or warm continental. The main difference being whether winter temperatures are cold enough to support a fixed period of snow cover each year. Most areas of northern Delaware experience relatively mild winters because the mountains of Pennsylvania protect it from harsh, cold winds. Summers are warm and humid with thunderstorms, although not as hot as the southeastern part of the state. Precipitation is distributed fairly evenly throughout the state; however, the north and southeast receive the most precipitation. Delaware is a tiny state, only 96 miles long and from 9 to 35 miles across. Almost all of the state is part of the Atlantic Coastal Plain and therefore the effects of the ocean moderate the climate. Severe storms, such as hurricanes are rare in northern Delaware and when they do occur, plenty of warning is given for these types of storms.
