Dover is the second largest city and capital of the state of Delaware. It is located in the central portion of the state in Kent County and has a population of approximately 35,000. Situated on the St. Jones River, Dover is one of the few major cities in the Northeast U.S. that is continuing to grow economically and in population. The city of Dover has a distinguished history dating to 1683 when it was founded by William Penn. The city's central square, known as The Green, was the site of many rallies, reviews and patriotic events during the American Revolution. Today, The Green remains the heart of Dover's historic district and is the location of the Kent County Courthouse and Delaware Supreme Court. Dover has a good mix of historical and cultural attractions, along with beautiful coastal scenery and pastoral farmland. Several special events are held here throughout the year, including art festivals, 4th of July fireworks and Christmas Caroling on The Green. Every June and September, the population of the city expands to over 200,000 for exciting NASCAR races and, as with all Delaware cities, Dover is well-known for its tax-free shopping. Other attractions in the capital city include museums, slots and harness racing and antiques shopping. Dover is approximately 90 miles south of Philadelphia and 90 miles east of Washington, DC.

Dover Weather & Climate

Central Delaware has a four-season climate that is classified as humid subtropical. Since almost all of the state is part of the Atlantic Coastal Plain, the effects of the ocean moderate the weather. The Atlantic Coastal Plain is flat and not very high, reaching no more than 80 feet above sea level. Summers are warm and sometimes humid, with July being the hottest month of the year. Winters are cold, but not frigid. In fact, the whole state of Delaware has relatively mild winters because the mountains of Pennsylvania protect it from cold northwest winds. Monthly average temperatures range from a high of 85.6 degrees in summer to a low of 23.2 degrees in winter. Precipitation is distributed fairly evenly throughout the state, although the north and southeast receive more precipitation than the central portion of the state. Thunderstorms are common in the summer months. Tornado activity in Central Delaware is less than the national average. Hurricanes rarely make direct his on the state, and plenty of warning is given for these types of storms.
