Seaford is the principal city of Sussex County, Delaware, which is located along the Nanticoke River in the southwestern portion of the state. Voted 28th in "The 100 Best Small Towns in America," Seaford has a population of approximately 7,000. It is home to The Riverwalk, which is a 400-foot lighted, landscaped sidewalk that is ideal for strolls along the river. Seaford's close proximity to the river, Chesapeake Bay and Atlantic Ocean provides lots of recreational opportunities for visitors. The Nanticoke River is prime for large-mouth bass fishing and canoeing and Seaford is within an hour's drive of six Atlantic Ocean beaches. In addition, several parks are located in Seaford, including Gateway Park, which forms the gateway into historic downtown Seaford. Other attractions include the Seaford Museum, the Ross Plantation (circa 1859,) and a 200-year-old cable-run ferry that crosses the Nanticoke River and operates seven days a week. As part of Sussex County, Seaford is known for its nature trails and bird sanctuaries and is also near Cape Henlopen State Park, Delaware Seashore State Park and Fenwick Island State Park.

Southwestern Delaware has a four-season climate that is moderated by the Atlantic Ocean. It is classified as humid subtropical. The state is the second smallest in the U.S. - only 96 miles long and from 9 to 35 miles across, and most of it lies within the Atlantic Coastal Plain. However, in spite of being so small, there is some variation between the north and south regarding temperature and amount of snowfall received each year. Southwestern Delaware has a somewhat milder climate and longer growing season than northern Delaware. Summers are hot and humid and winters are relatively mild due to the mountains of Pennsylvania blocking the cold winds in winter. Precipitation is distributed fairly evenly throughout the state, although southwestern Delaware receives less than the southeastern portion of the state. Thunderstorms are possible anytime of the year, but especially in spring and summer. Tornadoes in the state of Delaware are below the national average and hurricanes rarely make a direct.
