Bethel is a small town located in Sussex County, Delaware in the southwestern portion of the state. It is part of the Seaford Micropolitan Area. Although tiny is size and population, Bethel is unique in that the entire village is listed on the National Historic Register. Bethel was founded in the late 1700s and incorporated in the 1880s. The town is situated on the north bank of the Broad Creek near the town of Laurel and was a prosperous shipbuilding community in the late 1800s. Many of the homes in the town were built by ship carpenters for sea captains of that era. The quaint, historic homes are of Victorian and Italianate architecture. As part of Sussex County, Bethel has close proximity to the Nanticoke River which provides fishing and canoeing. The village is also within an hour's drive of six Atlantic Ocean beaches. Several parks are also located in the Bethel area, including Gateway Park, which forms the gateway into historic downtown Seaford. Other attractions near Bethel include the Seaford Museum, Ross Plantation, Trap Pond State Park, Trussum Pond, the Southern Delaware Heritage Cycling Trail, Cape Henlopen State Park, and Delaware Seashore State Park. The whole region is well known for its nature trails and bird watching opportunities.

Southwestern Delaware has a four-season climate that is moderated by the Atlantic Ocean. It is classified as humid subtropical. The state is the second smallest in the U.S. - only 96 miles long and from 9 to 35 miles across, and most of it lies within the Atlantic Coastal Plain. However, in spite of being so small, there is some variation between the north and south regarding temperature and amount of snowfall received each year. Southwestern Delaware has a somewhat milder climate and longer growing season than northern Delaware. Summers are hot and humid and winters are relatively mild due to the mountains of Pennsylvania blocking the cold winds in winter. Precipitation is distributed fairly evenly throughout the state, although southwestern Delaware receives less than the southeastern portion of the state. Thunderstorms are possible anytime of the year, but especially in spring and summer. Tornadoes in the state of Delaware are below the national average and hurricanes rarely make a direct.
