Laurel
is small town of approximately 3,600 located in Sussex County and part of the Seaford Micropolitan Statistical Area. Laurel once hosted the Laurel Blue Hens of the Eastern Shore Baseball League. The town of Laurel has an interesting history. Founded in 1683, by the time it incorporated in 1883, Laurel was considered one of the wealthiest cities in the state. The town consisted of eleven general stores, seven grocery stores, five millinery, three clothing, three drug stores, two furniture stores - and more. Quite busy for its time. In spite of a fire that destroyed a large section of the town, several historic structures remain in the town of Laurel., including the Marvil Package Company, which was once the largest manufacturers of baskets in the world. Block after block of Queen Anne and Colonial Revival homes line the streets, complete with cast iron fences, second-floor sleeping porches and bargeboard and fleur-de-lis bracket trim. Other nearby attractions include Trap Pond State Park, which encompasses nearly 3,000 acres and offers fishing, canoeing, camping, picnicking and bird watching. Trussum Pond, one of Delaware's most photographed natural wonders is only a ten-minute drive from Laurel. The town is also featured on the Southern Delaware Heritage Cycling Trail.

Southwestern Delaware has a four-season climate that is moderated by the Atlantic Ocean. It is classified as humid subtropical. The state is the second smallest in the U.S. - only 96 miles long and from 9 to 35 miles across, and most of it lies within the Atlantic Coastal Plain. However, in spite of being so small, there is some variation between the north and south regarding temperature and amount of snowfall received each year. Southwestern Delaware has a somewhat milder climate and longer growing season than northern Delaware. Summers are hot and humid and winters are relatively mild due to the mountains of Pennsylvania blocking the cold winds in winter. Precipitation is distributed fairly evenly throughout the state, although southwestern Delaware receives less than the southeastern portion of the state. Thunderstorms are possible anytime of the year, but especially in spring and summer. Tornadoes in the state of Delaware are below the national average and hurricanes rarely make a direct.
