Fenwick-Island
lies on the Delaware-Maryland border, nestled on a barrier island between the Atlantic Ocean and the Little Assawoman Bay. It is the southernmost of a cluster of beach resort towns that includes Lewes, Rehoboth Beach, Dewey Beach, Bethany Beach and South Bethany. Fenwick Island is known as one of "The Quiet Resorts." The town of Fenwick Island is approximately one mile long and a half mile wide and has a permanent population of about 350 residents. However, come summertime, the population swells to a few thousand. It is home to Fenwick Island State Park, where visitors enjoy 344 acres of peaceful ocean and bay shoreline. White sandy beaches gradually slope to the ocean and offer swimming, sunning and surfing. Lifeguards are on duty daily Memorial Day through Labor Day. The Little Assawoman Bay also offers an assortment of activities, such as boating and fishing, windsurfing, sailing and jet skiing. Fenwick Island offers both casual family dining and upscale restaurants, a variety of shops and many lovely homes available for summer rental. Fenwick Island has been known as "Fishermans Paradise" for over 75 years and each day at sunrise fishermen can be seen on the beach casting for flounder and bluefish. Just north of Fenwick Island is Delaware Seashore State Park, which is known for its miles of expansive sand dunes. Another popular attraction is the Fenwick Island Lighthouse. Fenwick Island beaches are the most expansive and least used beaches in the area.

Southern Delaware's weather is greatly moderated by the Atlantic Ocean. The state is the second smallest in the U.S., only 96 miles long and 9 to 35 miles across. Most of it lies within the Atlantic Coastal Plain and the climate transitions between a humid subtropical climate and a continental climate. However, despite its small size, there are significant variations in temperature and amount of snowfall among the state's three counties. Sussex County, which includes the southeastern beach areas, has a somewhat milder climate and a longer growing season than the northern part of the state. Summers are warm with occasional thunderstorms and July is the hottest month of the year. Southeastern Delaware tends to have the highest temperatures and more precipitation than the center of the state, with an average precipitation of 46 inches. Rainfall is fairly evenly distributed throughout the year, although August is usually the wettest month. The whole state has mild winters because the mountains of Pennsylvania protect it from cold northwest winds. January, on average, has the coldest temperatures.
